The tree rises from the dark. It circles around the “heart of darkness from where it reaches towards the light. The tree is a perfect presence. It is somehow able to engage and integrate its own dissolution. The tree is wise in knowing how to foster its own loss. (John O’Donohue, “Eternal Echoes” 1998:211)
We will all experience bereavement in our lifetimes and we will all experience loss and grief. There is misconception about the term “bereavement” which we can interpret as being as a result of a death of a person. In essence, as well as the most devastating form of loss being the death of a close relationship, we can grieve the loss of a childhood, the loss of trust, the loss of a friendship, the loss of status, the loss of our innocence; the list goes on.
In this one day course participants will gain a greater understanding of the process of loss, grief and bereavement and be able to normalise the process in their own lives and that of their service users. It will provide a broad basis of the various grief models, develop a compassionate approach to working with loss and provide an understanding of the normalising of grief as an ongoing concern.
