Differences between individuals at work are a natural order in the creation of group development which, according to Bruce Tuckman (1965) the author of the Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing Model, are necessary phases in order for a group or team to grow, face up to challenges, tackle problems, find solutions, plan work and deliver results; the results, hopefully, being a cohesive team. An entrenched workplace conflict often escalates and results in individuals remaining stuck in the Storming stage and mediation can provide a bridge into the Norming of the group.
Mediation is a completely voluntary and confidential form of alternative dispute resolution with an overriding aim of restoring and maintaining relationships and their dynamics wherever possible. The focus of mediation is to “ground” the issues creating or causing conflict, to understand the conflict and to move forward beyond blame and distress.
This practical one day course allows participants to understand the principles of mediation, the process of conflict and the benefits for the organisation in the addressing of inter-relational conflict. It will address the importance of a calm and centered approach in the mediator, consider the nature of conflict in groups and how a conflictual situation between colleagues impacts a whole team and ultimately the organisation itself. Participants will be better prepared to approach mediating a conflictual situation with emotional intelligence and resilience.
