Neurodiversity in the Workplace: Our ‘difference’ IS our Strength!
Does your workplace know how to support its neurodivergent employees?
Is your workplace neuroinclusive?
Just as nature needs biodiversity, the world and workplaces need neurodiversity – the range and richness of all neurotypes (brain types) coming together, co-operatively, for the greatest benefit. In the workplace neurodiversity allows for innovation, increased creativity, new and different approaches to problem solving, and the maximum potential that comes with having a neurodiverse workforce.
The challenge?
The difference is not equal, much of it is a numbers game! The predominant neurotype in the general population is the neurotypical brain type (approx. 80% of the general population is neurotypical), and the remaining are the minority neurotypes – neurodivergents – including Autistic people, those with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, and others.
This being the case, workplaces were created with the predominant neurotype (the 80%) in mind, so they are not always fully supporting the minority – the neurodivergents (the 20%). For workplaces and communities to capitalise on the amazing strengths – and they really ARE amazing(!) – and differences that neurodivergent people bring to the world of work, workplaces need to ensure neurodivergent people feel heard and appropriately supported.
Many workplaces are still confused about neurodivergence and neurodiversity, the language, the diagnoses, what they mean, the legal requirements, available resources, and know little about how to support neurodivergent people and creating a neuroinclusive environment. For many, this is new to them, so this is understandable.
With more people learning they have a neurodivergent brain, change is happening, and fast, and there are more than enough valuable reasons to be at the forefront of learning and support – not least to capitalise on our strengths!
