Planning your wedding can be an exciting and joyous time, but it may also bring about a lot of stress and overwhelm, particularly if you have a mental health condition. From choosing the perfect venue to coordinating with vendors and managing guest lists, the to-do list for your big day can seem never-ending. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, it’s crucial to prioritise your mental health and wellbeing

Here, we explore three effective strategies to help you manage your mental health while navigating the wedding planning process, so you can make the most of the precious few months in the lead-up to your wedding.

Practice self-care

Wedding planning often involves dedicating a significant amount of time and energy to ensure every detail is perfect. However, it’s important not to neglect your own self-care needs in the process. Making time for activities that help you relax and unwind, such as practising yoga or meditation, going for walks in nature, or indulging in a favourite hobby, can be a great way to reset between planning tasks. 

In addition, you’ll want to prioritise your sleep, eat nutritious meals, and stay hydrated. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally will help to give you the energy and resilience needed to tackle wedding planning with a clear mind.

Set realistic expectations

It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure of creating the “perfect” wedding. However, setting unrealistic expectations can lead to unnecessary stress and disappointment. Remember that perfection is subjective, and what matters most is celebrating your love and commitment with your partner. 

Be open to compromise and prioritise what truly matters to you both. You can also set realistic timelines for tasks and delegate responsibilities to trusted friends or family members. By managing your expectations and focusing on the meaningful aspects of your wedding, you can reduce stress and enjoy the planning process.

Wedding planning can feel all-consuming at times, and while this is totally normal, it’s important to remember that you can ask for help. Reach out to your support system, whether it’s your partner, family, or friends, for guidance and assistance. It’s a good idea to share your concerns and feelings with them if you feel comfortable doing so, as they may be able to offer valuable advice and help alleviate some of the burden. 

Similarly, hiring a wedding planner or coordinator to manage the logistics of your day can help to alleviate your stress. Some couples find that joining online wedding communities or forums can provide a sense of camaraderie and support from others going through a similar journey. If you’re particularly struggling with your mental health, it’s important to reach out to a healthcare professional such as a counsellor to talk through your concerns in a compassionate and understanding environment. Consider bringing your fiancé along to your session for an additional layer of support, and to chat through your shared experience.

Prioritise your mental health

Wedding planning is an exciting time for many, but it’s normal to find it taxing at times, too. By prioritising self-care, setting realistic expectations, and seeking support, you can navigate the process with greater ease and maintain your mental wellbeing.
