What is neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity is a relatively new term. It means accepting the idea that it’s perfectly normal for our brains to function in many different ways. And it means accepting all the behavioural traits that result from that huge diversity.
- A neurodivergent person’s brain functions in one or more ways that differ from a typical person. For example, neurodivergent people may self-identify as or be diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia.
- In the past these conditions were viewed as “problems” that needed fixing or an enigma to be solved. But neurodiversity focuses on a more appropriate way of celebrating, respecting, and handling these conditions.
- The qualities and traits that are created by neurodiversity vary from exceptional perceptions of the world, deep thinking, to high abilities with computer software and other specialisms, to enhanced creativity.
Why is neurodiversity important?
Neurotypical people were previously considered “normal”, and neurodivergent people were thought of as “abnormal” or “disordered”. Thankfully attitudes are changing, and this error in thinking is now being corrected. Neurodivergence is now recognised in the context of law and employment.
- It’s estimated that 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent. People would previously mistake these divergences as “laziness” “misbehaviour” and other negative labels.
- Neurodivergent people are at an increased risk of suffering from mental illness and poor well-being. This can be due to a lack of support or recognition, both socially and in the workplace.
- Some neurodivergent people can thrive in the workplace and build resilience to the difficulties they might face. But for many, working can be a struggle, and they may be battling depression, stress, and bullying.
